i love love love that it is yuki who essentially gives kyo the permission he needed to forgive himself and move on from a tortured past, and embrace a life he thought he had no right to. I LOVE THAT SHIT SO MUCH.ย
throughout the story, we see a kyo who is tortured by burdens that were not his to carry in the first place. being cursed by the cat and being look down on, excluded for the sake of the other zodiac not having to feelย too badly about their own curse, resigned to a future in exile. his own motherโs death which he thought his state had pushed her to, kyokoโs death which he thought he was too selfish and loathsome to prevent, and by extension he thought he was a source of great pain and deprivation in tohruโs life, the girl he had wanted to protect as a boy, the friend he had come to love and cherish deeply. he also though he misled down to the path to loving him without her knowing his truth and was despicable for that, also. all these things he carried with him which in his eyes, make him a deplorable creature undeserving of love and companionship, or even forgiveness from one who he believed to have wronged.
enter yuki.ย
ย yuki sohma has just ended this catโs life. but in the best way possible. in between punches and many wonderful yuki-isms, yuki lays the truth out to kyo in a way that leaves him quite spectacularly speechless. and tbh there really was probably no other way to get that message across to kyo. A+ to yuki on Communication.
ย the chapter actually opens on a much more sombre looking yuki at the hospital, having accompanied tohru there, and he is sitting alone thinking this:
yuki arrives at a truth kyo has struggled to attained and punished himself over his whole life. he then goes home and proceeds to literally beat this lesson into kyo and he gets through.ย
and whatโs best is that yuki is the one who ultimately opens kyoโs eyes to how much he means to tohru, and that what he does for her is something he should not take for granted. yuki is the ultimate matchmaker in this situation poor boy is so fed up of the tension around his momย tohru and kyo that ultimately, he ends up being the one to give kyo the push he needed to allow himself to love Tohru. and also imparts to kyo a lesson that stays with him throughout his life, that tells him its okay to have made mistakes, you are not a superhero, that sometimes bad things happen that you donโt have control over and that you donโt have to live a life of regret over not being able to save people you thought you could have saved. i canโt imagine these two not ending up being an important figure in each otherโs lives down the road. they already are, at this point.ย
isnโt that what friends do? they barge into your room uninvited and tell you to not be so hard on yourself when youโre beating yourself up.ย
friends help you walk again when youโve forgotten how to move from a heavy stillness. they come in and open doors and you were too blind to see. and there may not be the need for words of thanks between them, what words would ever be enough, any way.ย
i think they go on to develop a beautiful brotp.ย
So I was checking the Yen Press website for any Karneval news, like I do every few months, and I found this!!!!!! Theyโre going to be releasing a volume 9!!!!! Which should be volumes 17&18 of the Japanese volumes.
I got so happy when I saw this. I had feared they wouldnโt translate it anymore because itโs been so long, but hopefully weโll get some more volumes after this as well.
1. Always choose kindness. Tohru’s kindness has touched the Sohma clan and ended hundred years of pain and sufferings. The curse may still be broken even if she’s not there, but if it weren’t for her they would remain chained by hate. Her kindness has rippled even after their generation.
2. Never judge someone by just reputation. Yuki has been hated even before he was met because he represents a sneaky rat from an ancient fable. Kyo is isolated because of his real form. All of the zodiacs suffered because of the curse, some are even abandoned by their parents. Only a few had stuck around to know the REAL them. Only a few knew of their pain. Only a few saw how beutiful they are, in their own unique individual way.
3. Even if the world hurts you, never return the same pain to others. Akito has been abused since she was a child and to cope with it, she abused everyone around her as if to make them feel the same loneliness she felt. Did it do her any good? No. It even made her more alone. She scarred everyone. Hurting someone cannot make your own pain go away. It only makes it worse .
4. Learn to forgive, it set’s your mind free. Only after forgiving his mother, Ayame, Akito and Hatori had Yuki fully been freed. In essence, he chose to forgive them and not to blame someone for all the bad things that happened in his life. Even if no one had actually said sorry to him in earnest. Tohru, Momiji, Shigure, Hatori, Kureno even Hiro, chose to forgive Akito. This made her repent and pushed her to become better. Forgiveness can save a life.
5. Never lose hope, someone will love you for who you are. Flaws and all. Even if it feels like the world is against you. Even if your own parents abandons you. Even if you think no one is there to understand you. Someone will always come to be by your side, to accept, love and support you. Someone who will love you wholly, not because they pity you or its their responsibility but because they can’t live without you. Someone who will calm the monster in you.
apparently someone left their iphone in our store. the phone was found by a woman, henceforth known as “Terrible Lady,” when Phone Owner set off the “find my iphone” alarm. the alarm is accompanied by a “please contact this # if found” message. Terrible Lady utilizes this number to text Phone Owner, demanding $100 in return for the phone. Phone Owner says they can’t afford it, there’s some back and forth, etc. etc., and eventually Phone Owner threatens to call the cops.
Terrible Lady brings the phone (which is still making the obnoxious “find my iphone” noise, and continues to do for the duration of the encounter) to my register, complaining about the audacity of Phone Owner, as if refusing to pay the $100 is an egregious personal insult. i “mhm” a lot, silently judging her, but relieved she has sensibly decided to release the phone into the store’s custody so we can return it to Phone Owner without further drama.
LMAO WRONG
fifteen minutes later, after she has checked out, she comes by my register just long enough to say “make sure she pays the $100, i’ll call to see when i need to come pick it up!” and is out the door before i can even process the fact that this women genuinely thinks that the burlington fucking coat factory is going to be the middleman for her definitely unethical and most likely illegal lost iphone extortion scheme. (side note: i looked this up once i got home from work, and it turns out that, yeah, it’s totally illegal in our state)
sure enough, an hour later, Terrible Lady calls: “hi, is this cashier #5? [that’s not my name but thanks] has she brought the $100 yet??”
there are like 2 cashiers on duty and 20 people in line. i beg my manager to take the call, which: smart move. because my manager ends up on the phone with Terrible Lady for 20 minutes, telling her that we will, under no circumstances, require Phone Owner to pay $100 before we give them the phone. eventually, Terrible Lady realizes we mean business, and SHE threatens to call the cops on US because we took the phone from her “under false pretenses”
manager hangs up on Terrible Lady /end
What did I just read?
One of the most accurate depictions of how awful customers can be.
Low-key the best thing about Yuki and Kyoโs relationship post their fight near the end of the manga is Yuki relentlessly giving Kyo shit with his โprincelyโ expression on and Kyo just taking it.
Bonus: He does this to Machi too
I love when Yukiโs true personality comes out!!! Itโs so great.
